Washington State University: Taking a Holistic View of Faculty

 by COACHE staff Supporting faculty at all stages of their career, says Amy Wharton, Washington State University’s Director of the College of Arts and Sciences, became a target goal when WSU’s COACHE data revealed varying perceptions, demographics & experiences across faculty ranks.  Particularly troubling were the reported lower levels of satisfaction among Associate Professors compared to colleagues at the beginning and end of their careers. Determining how faculty feel about their jobs, particularly as faculty were reporting different levels of satisfaction, provided WSU with a constructive platform for workplace improvement.  Prior to this, they had done a cohort analysis of associate professors, examining issues such as the timeliness of faculty promotion and gender differences in this process.  “In general,” says Wharton, “after you get tenure, ‘it’s like, OK, good luck, have fun.’”   > Read More Published in COACHE, Vol. 6, Issue 1
