SUMMARY:Fall 2023 VAuLTS Conference
DESCRIPTION:ADVANCE at WSU and the VAuLTS Program Present: \nVAuLTS Partnership Workshop on Institutional Transformation and Faculty Advancement – Reimagining the Professoriate.\nThe Facilitator \nDr. Colette Taylor\, EdD\, Seattle University \nThe Workshop \nIn 2020\, Seattle University successfully revised its guidelines for promotion to Full Professor to include a range of faculty activities that typically do not count toward promotion. These activities\, which include community-engaged scholarship\, applied scholarship\, student-faculty research\, and institution building\, are directly and positively related to student success and university reputation but are not counted in traditional metrics for advancement. Women and faculty of color are overrepresented in these activities and less likely to advance as a result of their under-valuation. Since revising its guidelines\, Seattle University has successfully promoted 27 women and faculty of color in the past three years (previously\, the annual average was 2\, with a range of 0-4 across the past 25 years). This workshop will build on the work that the Seattle University ADVANCE team did on the cultural adaptations necessary to support and sustain deep institutional transformation. \nParticipants will: \n\nLearn a multi-dimensional model of organizational change and a participatory action research (PAR) methodology.\nParticipate in discussions amongst colleagues to support one another in their own initiatives\nLearn new ways to redirect faculty culture toward an awareness of and appreciation for holistic faculty careers as the hub of a diverse\, equitable\, and vibrant university\n\nConference Details \nWhen: October 13-14\, 2023\nWhere: Davenport Grand\, Spokane\, WA\nRegistration: Complete the form below to register for the event by September 20th \nFood will be provided during the conference.\nHotel accommodations are available to book after registering. \n  \nConference Agenda: Principles of Affecting Change \nDay 1: October 13\, 2023 (Noon – 8:00 PM) \n12:00 PM – 1:00 PM: Registration and Networking\n1:00 PM – 1:30 PM: Welcome and Conference Overview\n– Introduction to the VauLTs Conference\n– Objectives of the Gathering\n1:30 PM – 2:30 PM: Session 1: Seattle U Story – Opening\n– Presentation on Seattle University’s Successful Change Initiatives\n– Key Takeaways\, Inspirational Insights and Q & A\n2:30 PM – 3:30 PM: Session 2: Context for Each Institution\n– Participants Share Their Hopes and Dreams for Their Institutions\n– Open Discussion on Current Struggles and Challenges\n3:30 PM – 4:00 PM: Networking Break\n4:00 PM – 5:30 PM: Session 3: Strategies for Organizational Change\n– Expert Panel Discussion on Effective Change Management Strategies\n– Examining Real-world Case Studies\n5:30 PM – 7:00 PM: Dinner Break (provided)\n7:00 PM – 8:00 PM: Session 4: Crafting Preliminary Action Plans\n– Forming Working Groups Based on Common Interests and Goals\n– Encouraging Partnerships from the Same Institution\n– Working Groups Begin Developing Initial Action Plans\n– Setting Goals\, Objectives\, and First Steps\n8:00 PM – 8:30 PM: Evening Debrief and Closing \nDay 2: October 14\, 2023 (9:00 AM – 3:00 PM) \n8:30 AM – 9:00 AM: Coffee and Networking\n9:00 AM – 9:15 AM: Recap of Day 1 and Overview of Day 2\n9:15 AM – 10:30 AM: Session 5: Refining Action Plans\n– Working Groups Refine and Enhance Their Action Plans\n– Identifying Resources\, Timeline\, and Accountability Measures\n10:30 AM – 11:45 AM: Session 6: How Do We Use This Year to Propel Change?\n– Strategies for Effective Implementation and Progress Monitoring\n– Celebrating Achievements and Overcoming Challenges\n11:45 AM – 12:30 PM: Session 7: Sharing and Peer Feedback\n– Working Groups Share Their Action Plans\n– Peer Feedback and Suggestions for Improvement\n12:30 PM – 1:30 PM: Lunch Break (provided)\n1:30 PM – 2:30 PM: Session 8: Building a Support Network\n– Strategies for Creating a Collaborative Network of Change Leaders\n– Sharing Resources and Building Stronger Partnerships\n2:30 PM – 3:00 PM: Closing Remarks and Workshop Evaluation\n– Reflecting on the Workshop Experience\n– Collecting Feedback for Future Workshops \n\nPlease note that this agenda is subject to minor adjustments\, and participants are encouraged to actively engage in discussions\, networking\, and group activities throughout the workshop to maximize their learning and collaboration opportunities. \n \n  \nFor more information on ADVANCE events and programs\, make sure to visit our website: https://advance.wsu.edu\nADVANCE at WSU | Washington State University\nLighty Building\, Room 190F\nPullman\, WA 99164 | Contact Us

SUMMARY:Restoring the Wetxuuwíitin’ Collection: A Consideration of Place and De-Colonizing Material Culture
DESCRIPTION:ADVANCE at WSU\, Department of Entomology\, and Department of Psychology Present:\nRestoring the Wetxuuwíitin’ Collection: A Consideration of Place and De-Colonizing Material Culture\n \nJoin ADVANCE at WSU\, Department of Entomology\, and Department of Psychology for a reception and presentation\, with time for questions and networking to follow. \nPresentation by Special Guests: \nNakia Williamson-Cloud\, Director of Nez Perce Tribe Culture Resource Program and Trevor Bond\, Associate Dean of WSU Libraries and Director of the WSU Center for Arts and Humanities \nAbout the Presentation\nIn 1847\, Presbyterian missionary Henry Spalding acquired handmade Nez Perce artifacts and sent them from north-central Idaho to his friend and supporter\, Dudley Allen\, in Ohio in exchange for commodities. This was the fate of many early Native American materials\, to be appropriated by non-Natives and removed from the hands and lands that created them. The shirts\, dresses\, baskets\, horse regalia\, and more— called the Wetxuuwíitin’ (formerly Spalding-Allen) Collection—would not return to their rightful home until they were purchased by the tribe from the Ohio Historical Society in 1996 for $608\,100. The reclamation of these Nez Perce artifacts is the subject of a new WSU Press book\, “Coming Home to Nez Perce Country\,” published in June 2021. Click here to learn more about the book. \nThis event is open to WSU faculty and students. This event is free to all participants\, but you MUST RSVP by clicking HERE.\n

SUMMARY:Microaggressions\, Identity\, and Intersectionality: Recognizing our Selves in the Academy - Session 2
DESCRIPTION:ADVANCE at WSU Presents:\nMicroaggressions\, Identity\, and Intersectionality: Recognizing our Selves in the Academy – Session 2\n \nThis virtual workshop is designed for all WSU faculty to understand microaggressions\, their sources\, and the role of identity in microaggressions. In this workshop\, we create a space for faculty to recognize their multiple identities and reflect on the ways in which their identities intersect and shift across multiple contexts. \nParticipants will learn: \n\nCommon sources of microaggressions\nDifferent identities of self\nHow multiple identities intersect and how these intersections vary by context\n\nCo-Facilitated By: \n \nDr. Regina Barber DeGraaff is a Mexican-Taiwanese-American\, pop-culture-obsessed\, astrophysicist\, who teaches physics\, astronomy\, and science communication at WWU. Regina completed her Ph.D. in physics at Washington State University in 2011\, studying distant extragalactic globular clusters using the Hubble Space Telescope. In 2015\, Regina co-created and began to host the radio show (KMRE) & WWU podcast Spark Science. This talk show strives to humanize the scientist and make science\, technology\, engineering\, and math (STEM) accessible. She also created the position of the STEM Inclusion and Outreach Specialist at WWU devoted to the retention and support of underrepresented students and faculty in STEM. Through all her efforts\, Regina’s goal is to break apart the scientist stereotype so that anyone can see themselves in science. \n  \n \nDr. Stephany RunningHawk Johnson is an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota nation and an Assistant Professor of Cultural Studies and Social Thought in Education at Washington State University.  Her research focuses on supporting Indigenous students attending universities and majoring in science fields\, with a particular emphasis on how the philosophy behind the way science courses are taught creates barriers for Indigenous students\, as well as other students of color. Stephany is working with local Tribes to incorporate land-based education and Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledges in order to increase Indigenous students’ sense of identity and belonging in a university setting. She is also conducting research on how non-Indigenous instructors can begin to decolonize their curriculum and teaching practices. All of Stephany’s work is done through an Indigenous Feminist lens and is dedicated to supporting Nation building\, Tribal sovereignty\, and empowering Indigenous communities and students in working toward social justice. \nThis event is open to WSU faculty (at all campus sites). SUMMARY:PowerPlay Bias Awareness and Intervention Lab
DESCRIPTION:ADVANCE at WSU and The Carson College of Business Present:\nPowerPlay Bias Awareness and Intervention Lab\n \nBiases create obstacles toward a fair and equitable workplace.\nPowerPlay can help build awareness of these biases. We’ll help you experiment with different intervention strategies in a risk-free\, dynamic way.\n\n Session I: 9:30 am-12:30 pm\nSession II: 1:30 pm-4:30 pm\n\nPowerPlay’s Bias Awareness and Intervention Training Lab is focused on creating a fair and equitable workplace through building awareness of the biases that create obstacles towards that goal. The facilitated\, interactive workshop allows participants to identify incidents of bias and then build the ability to address those issues in a positive and constructive way. Interaction involves witnessing brief moments of bias and experimenting with different strategies from the perspective of the bystander by suggesting intervention tactics to actors who then replay the scene. Participants get to play Director and Experimenter from the comfort of their chair. The PowerPlay team can also take “requests” on the spot: our actor-improvisers can examine incidents that are suggested from the audience that may be unique to a participant’s experience in this institution’s climate and culture. \nDr. Stephanie Goodwin\, a renowned leading expert on bias intervention and awareness training and best practices\, will supplement the program with a presentation and facilitation. PowerPlay collaborated closely with Dr. Goodwin on the development of this Training Lab\, which grew out of an NSF Conference presentation by Univ. of New Hampshire ADVANCE focused on utilizing interactive theatre to address bystander intervention.  \n \nThis event is only open to WSU faculty (at all campus sites). There will be an option for faculty participants to live stream into the presentation. When registering make sure to select the live streaming option if you cannot attend the presentation in person.  \n
