Department Development Grant

There is no solicitation for proposals at this time.

Identified STEM departments are eligible to submit a proposal unless you were previously awarded a grant. If you previously applied but were not funded, you are eligible to apply again.  See list of eligible departments in this RFP. Washington State University is committed to improving the work environment, often referred to as department climate, for faculty, staff and students.  In support of this commitment, ADVANCE at WSU, through the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President, invited proposals for grants to implement initiatives designed to improve department climate. In the spring of 2012, we solicited for our 2nd round of ADVANCE at WSU Department Development Grant proposals.  The August 2010 ADVANCE Institutional Transformation workshop, hosted by Provost Bayly, was designed to assist with the development of quality proposals.  At the workshop academic deans, chairs and directors learned about state-of-the-art research and information on climate evaluation (e.g., Harvard’s Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education-COACHE-survey), and best practices associated with recruitment, retention and advancement of an inclusive, excellent faculty.  Through participation in the workshop, academic deans, chairs and directors established a clear sense of “What factors shape department climate?”; “How do other institutions implement COACHE results?”; and “What does research suggest are best and/or promising practices in recruitment and retention?”  A department (or school, institute, college, or program) on the qualifying list could request up to $7,500.00.  Department leaders could apply for grants on behalf of their department, or faculty could submit a proposal, supported by the department leader.  We anticipated funding 5-7 proposals.
