McCluskey elected president of AAEA
Washington State University professor Jill McCluskey has been elected president of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA), a national association working to further knowledge about the economics of agriculture, rural communities and natural resources.

UmaJayaram2Mechanical and materials engineer Uma Jayaram named ASME fellow
Uma Jayaram, associate professor of mechanical and materials engineering, was named a fellow of the prestigious Amerian Society of Mechanical Engineers in recognition of her “significant engineering achievements and contributions to the engineering profession.” ASME cited Dr. Jayaram’s contributions to development of virtual reality techniques for design and her “seminal work in integrating various CAD/CAE systems by using advanced knowledge representation techniques, including ontologies and the evolving Semantic Web.”

Chemist Sue Clark named to Washington State Academy of Sciences

Sue Clark, Regents professor of chemistry and staff scientist in the WSU Nuclear Radiation Center, has developed ways to quickly identify radioactive materials in environmental samples. President Barack Obama appointed her last year to the U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board, which advises Congress on the technical aspects of the management and disposal of the nation’s high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel.

nancymagnusonsmADVANCE at WSU Director Nancy Magnuson named AAAS fellow

Professor of molecular biosciences and director of the ADVANCE at WSU program, Nancy Magnuson was named a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science in recognition of her distinguished contributions to cancer research, particularly for studies elucidating the function of the proto-oncogene PIM1 and its role in promoting cancer cell survival. Dr. Magnuson is among seven WSU faculty members named to AAAS in 2011 for their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.

loricarrisMycologist Lori Carris honored for excellence in teaching

Lori Carris, associate professor in the Department of Plant Pathology, was recognized by the Mycological Society of America with the William H. Weston Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award was presented at the organization’s 2011 meeting in Anchorage, AL. The Weston award for teaching is given annually to an outstanding teacher of mycology at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels. The award was established in 1979 in honor of W.H. Weston (1890–1978).
