A Message from the Director
2015-2016 is a period of transformation for ADVANCE at WSU, as we are transitioning from being an NSF funded effort, to a sustainable set of programs supported by WSU. We are very enthusiastic about implementing our core programs, aimed at the recruitment and retention of women faculty in STEM disciplines at WSU (as funded by NSF ADVANCE) and our new mission which includes working to increase the numbers of under-represented minority faculty members in all disciplines at WSU. All of us working on ADVANCE at WSU programs are very excited about this new mandate from the Provost and Deans of the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences, and the College of Veterinary Medicine. We will continue our grant opportunities under existing programs, including the External Mentor Program, PRO-NET, and the Transitions Grant Program. You are eligible to apply for these programs if you are a woman faculty member in a tenure-track position in a STEM discipline or an under-represented minority faculty member in any discipline at WSU. ADVANCE at WSU has established outstanding opportunities for women faculty in STEM disciplines and we look forward to offering these programs to our under-represented minority faculty as well. In the past year we have had changes in staffing, starting with the retirement of Nancy Magnuson, the transition of Sandy Watson to her role as Assistant to the Vice-President of Research, and then Laura Lavine serving as the Interim Director. We want to sincerely thank our former Director, Professor Nancy Magnuson and her assistant Sandy Watson, for their many years of dedicated service promoting and supporting women faculty in STEM at Washington State University. We are also grateful for the efforts of our Interim Director, Laura Lavine, who continues to make important contributions to program planning and implementation, and the Principal Investigator for the NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant (NSF 0810927) grant, Candis Clairborn, whose commitment to ADVANCE at WSU has made these programs possible. We would also like to welcome our new Steering Committee members – Interim Co-provosts Erica Austin and Ron Mittelhammer. We look forward to their contributions to the programs offered by ADVANCE at WSU.
Finally, as we are closing out the final year of our NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant, we will continue to pursue opportunities related to this funding and welcome any ideas or suggestions you may have!

Goals of ADVANCE
- Increase the percentage of women faculty in target science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines and under-represented minority (URM) faculty in all disciplines.
- Support policies and practices to enhance recruitment, retention, and advancement of women and under-represented minority faculty.
- Foster a positive, inclusive work environment through programs and career-development opportunities that include support at critical work/life transition points for all faculty.
- Engage the WSU community to further the NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation goals
